MSC turns down lobster fishery

by Russel Norman

It may seem like a bad news story – the Marine Stewardship Council has turned down a lobster fishery’s application to be certified as sustainable.

But in some ways it’s good news because the MSC has been rather too lax on certifying fisheries as sustainable so it’s good to know that a fishery can actually fail the process. People may recall that the New Zealand Hoki fishery was certified as sustainable by the MSC and soon after the fishery was inconsderate enough to demonstrate how unsustainable it was by collapsing. This is besides the bottom trawling, seabird loss and mammal deaths that Forest & Bird have drawn attention to.

The MSC registration of the Hoki fishery is being contested.
