There needs to be something done about our prisons. Before long we'll have more people in prisons in the US than we have people to support the prisoners. What Then?? Whatever the powers to be have been doing has not been working and a change needs to be made. It is almost laughable if it wasn't so pathetic to know that when a prisoner gets out of jail for a small crime and does not have a family or friend willing and/or able to be the right kind of support. They have no one to turn to for help; nor can they qualify food stamps, housing and getting a job is non existent. Wonder why so many end back up in prison????

I think that even Duncan agrees, this isn't how actual Capitalism is supposed to work. A little more on how the slow-motion train wreck is progressing.

The issue isn't just the issues, but the participants in the debate and the degree to which their behavior is hard-wired, subsequent level of motivation, and ascendancy to prominent position (as in high up a list).

the times may justify what some people say BJ, but we have/ had people here who sang the praises of North Korea, Pol Pot, Albania, when they should have known better.

After fine weather we have a storm...

We have to factor the hordes of newly wealthy in the east .. ?

Things are settling but things aren't bad until there is a paradigm shift, that hasn't happened yet. People perceive a gushing volcano of wealth in the world.

While their are contrarian economists there doesn't seem much alarm from the mainstream???

I think we live in a madhouse "growth, growth, growth". I think we need to touch base with reality.... What if: What if pirates prevented any overseas trade and we were completely isolated.. how would we survive.. there's an optimal state and then there's entropy..

Duncan

That's the more reasonable position I would've expected to hear from you and I have no particular argument with it except that you need to consider the tenor of the times. Dunno what she'd say about it today. Nobody asks her about that either.... but I am of that era, I know how it felt to be on campus hearing about the shootings at Kent State. Marching on Washington. All of it.

It wasn't much like a holiday, it was a lot more like a revolution in the making, but without the necessary organization. We NEEDED the revolution, and didn't get it. We were involved in our first "illegal" war.

So I refrain from judging her on things that haven't been discussed recently and tend to go easy on her about ancient history. I was there too.

Our prison statistics and systematic incarceration is a mess. She points to the mess.... I don't care what else she did, I still have to acknowledge the mess.

respectfully

Bear Stearns Investors Await Tally on Losses
By E.S. BROWNING
Wall Street Journal, July 2, 2007; Page C3

Investors in two Bear Stearns hedge funds will have to wait until as late as July 16 to learn how much money they have lost.

The Wall Street firm has had difficulty calculating the funds' fair value, apparently because many of the mortgage-related securities they hold are thinly traded and the market for them has been volatile...

... net asset values as of May 31 would be calculated "on or before July 16," and that it would make its best effort to calculate an estimate of the June 30 value of the two funds by the same time....

Investors are watching the process closely because they believe that other hedge funds also are holding thinly traded mortgage-related securities, and they want to see how far Bear thinks their value has fallen.

bj,

I've already judged her, on the basis that she stood as a candidate for the Communist Party. That alone is morally equivalent to running for any other totalitarian party - and as far as I'm aware, she hasn't renounced her views. She was no innocent, duped supporter, she was an active candidate.

The issue of her supporting totalitarian Communist states jailing dissidents - reported by Solzhenitsyn no less - is just another nail in the coffin, so to speak.
