8. naturevision Says:

> In more ‘enlightened times’, we introduced possums, stoats, deer, goats and pigs. we’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars since then trying to reverse the damage…

> Roll on the ‘enlightened times’ huh?

ou for the good old days, when wife beaters walked free and homosexuals were locked up

ha ha yeah you're right, in more 'enlightened' times, we drained 95% of our wetlands, wondered why the farms began to get flooded every time there was a downpour, and had no natural filter to protect water quality.

a devout anti-greenie farmer i know in the Waikato, has gone from trying to get rid of his wetland, to taking the willows out, fencing it off and blocking the drains. now he informs me with a grin, he has no need to irrigate his surrounding paddocks in summer, which are kept wet from the nearby wetland, and in winter, it soaks up excess moisture, preventing flooding.

"attractive and useful"? More like flood-prone farmland and state housing areas, and more recently upmarket housing "estates".

- "A number of invertebrates occur in the wetland including seven species of molluscs, seven species of water flea. Aquatic insect life includes dragonflies, damselflies, water beetles, non-biting midges, craneflies, midges and water and a tinywater skate Microvelia is possibly the most abundant animal in the wetland."

Good grief, it's beyond parody. Water fleas? Craneflies? Midges?

In more enlightened times, places like this were drained and turned into something attractive and useful.

We all know what we must do to stop the eventual collapse of this "Unique!" enviroment, and i mean unique! there isn't another we can go to to replace it. You know what they say "Never %&*%# where you eat", sadly in our case that is exactly what we are doing/done.

Jim is a classic conservationist. Unfortunately the thorn in his side is the short sightedness and self-serving of certain elements in maoridom. For some reason labour's share of the maori constituency is threatened by the gang-promoting, racist maori party, which means in turn the maori MPs of labour are under constant threat from rejection by a backward thinking maori heirachy.
