Big Brother cleans up

Well, not really, in that there’s still plenty of trash. But the makers of the Australian reality show are cashing in on some Green cache by theming the house ‘green’ , incorporating environmental challenges in the game and using sustainable building practices.

Some commentators are saying it’s a cynical attempt to try and claw back an iota of credibility after the programme descended even futher into the gutter last season. On the other hand, does it matter? If mainstream tv is going to take the sustainbility to message to millions of viewers - and ’sex it up’ in the process do we care - about the integrity of the medium?

It even appears the show may prompt changes to state Government policy on recycled water, after they wrangled an exemption to a recycled water ban. “The grey water system by far was the toughest thing to implement…. Despite Queensland having a drought and a Premier who claims to drink recycled water, there’s a blanket prohibition on using a grey water system if you have water connected to the house.”

Other initiatives include “recycled, Australian-made fabrics for the diary room chair, sun lounges made from 50,000 recycled plastic Pepsi lids, water fountains that draw condensation from fresh air and non-allergenic 80 per cent goat-haired carpets.”
