Field’s options
I think if I were Field I would resign now and force a byelection asap. The longer he leaves it, the longer Labour has a chance to discredit him in the electorate and the greater opportunity Labour has to rebuild their party organisation on the ground.
Not that I want to help him out particularly, I have other reasons as well…. Between him leaving and getting re-elected, the numbers in the House just might create an opportunity for us to make Labour introduce some sustainability measures into the Budget. Cullen, Dunne and Peters would have a fit of course at the thought of doing anything for the environment but possibly Clark could see the political logic of it, having just given a speech about sustainability!
