Some of the Green MPs held a short vigil on Parliament lawn today for Ingrid Betancourt, a Colombian Green MP and one of the world’s most high-profile hostages. She was kidnapped by guerrillas in Colombia four years ago today, and the anniversary is being marked internationally as a day of solidarity for hostages around the world. The NZ Green MPs stood alongside a blank cardboard cutout of Ms Betancourt, and were joined by members of Amnesty International.
If you speak French or Spanish, the official website for Ingrid Betancourt might be useful, but if not, try this wikipedia entry for some background. You can also read more about the group who are holding her here.
Interestingly, a book released in January this year claims that personal relationships between French Chancellor Villepin and the Betancourt sisters Astrid and Ingrid (her first husband was a French diplomat) were the main driving force behind French Government involvement in the case and the cause of several mistakes that have prolonged her captivity in the hands of the Colombian guerrilla movement FARC.
Green Parties around the world will be marking the anniversary with similar action today.
