my god....it is so exquisitely ugly.....

wtf were the council thinking....?

that's up there with them pissing $7million up against the wall throwing promotional parties for peter jacksons' movies.....eh..?

(imagine what the wellington city council could have done with that $7 million..if it was directed at environmental issues....what would $7million buy..?

is the wellington city council totally in the pocket of peter jackson...?

where is the 'peter' statue going to be positioned..?....

can i suggest a giant 'peter-face' be carved into those hills most wellingtonians look at..(when the rainclouds lift..:)

back to the sculpture(?).....it looks like maybe the worst/ugliest piece if neo-realist soviet scupture.....ever....(only a tech-head could love such a thing....and it was cobbled together by...?..)

could someone point wellingtons' under-utilised anarchists at this blight.....perhaps a makeover..?

And it's only semi a gift - I think cost basically 50/50 from City Council and Weta with a few other donators?

Still, I like it, though I know plenty who have, um, reservations. But there's enough (or a large enough prportion) of pretty sculptures - all the wind ones for example, and the big ball in Civic Square and so on, nothing wriong with a few darker pieces.

Katie: The designer himself told me that its actually solid bronze, the *recycled* stuff was used to make the mould, so all the cool detail like the game consoles and toastie maker are bronze reproductions, not the real thing covered up. Given that the bits and bobs were probably then dumped, its morea monument to recycling then anything else :)

The photoelectric cells are news to me, I don't know where they would be, the light in the nozzle is on all the time.

And it is permanent.

Stuey,
yes, it does appear to be a permanent gift to the city and citizens, from Richard Taylor and crew;
the beastie is actually a pretty green mechanism, however, as most of the metal is recycled stuff, welded together and oversprayed to make a coherent whole.
My resident pet geek, Stephen (12years) easily identified some nintendo and playstation parts, others are looking for toasters, car paarts and so on.....

During the day, it has photoelectric cells which collect power, which runs a small light at night, focussed through the camera lens onto pedestrians to light the small courtyard there.

aah, yep, I was employed by Weta once, but not these days...

thanks frog, is that thing permanent?

I can see what you mean - its somewhat oppressive and you can see how it would make the street more like Mordor than Lothlorian.
