Action on the climate this Saturday

Saturday is The International Day of Action on Climate Change:

These demonstrations demand that the USA and Australia ratify the Kyoto Protocol immediately, and that the entire world community move as rapidly as possible to a stronger emissions reductions treaty that will be both equitable and effective in stabilising ‘greenhouse’ gases and preventing dangerous climate change.

The day of action on 3 December has been initiated in England and is supported by demonstrations in 19 countries. It is timed to coincide with the first meeting of parties to the Kyoto Protocol, which is currently under way in Montreal in Canada, ending 9 December.

FYI, there’s now a dedicated climate change action blog.

The Day of Action has sneaked up on us a bit, so the Greens are only involved in a couple of small events.

In Wellington WWF, the Climate Defence Network, Gecko (the Vic Uni Environmental group) and the Greens are hosting a climate change fair in Cuba Mall from 11.00am - 3.00pm.

There will be stalls on sustainable living and speakers, from bodies ranging from the Wellington City Council to the Public Health Association, highlighting how climate change will impact New Zealand and what can be done to help mitigate its impact. It will be a family event as well, so loads of games are planned. Contact - laurabeckaotearoa@gmail.com.

Meanwhile in Dunedin, Metiria and the local Greens are holding a climate change stall at the Farmers’ Market from 10.00. Then from 11.00am, they will be going on a mass cycle ride to promote safer cycling as one way of reducing the carbon pollution that contributes to climate change.
