Unhappy in the valley
Efforts to save Happy Valley from the stunningly dumb proposal to dig it up as the Cypress export open-cast coal mine met up with some in-the-field intimidation from Solid Energy on the weekend.
Today’s Press has the media version of what happened.
For a more detailed view from the campaigners themselves, see their report.
“The Cypress mine is a classic example of the choice facing New Zealanders about the sort of country we want to live in, said Ms Fitzsimons.
“The unique eco-system at Cypress is there because of the coal beneath it, the highly acidic soil is the basis of the unique eco-system.
“What do we want, one-of-a-kind-in-the-world ecology or a pile of cash and a heated-up atmosphere from selling coal to Japan?
“Cypress may be faraway and out-of-mind for most New Zealanders, but if this ‘if-it-pays, dig-it-up’ attitude keeps going, only a few pockets of ‘Clean, Green New Zealand’ will soon be left.

Out of interest - which Happy Valley? I’m assuming it’s not the one in Wellington which houses the euphemistically named Southern Landfill (a.k.a the Happy Valley tip).

Unfortunately this kind of attitude is widely prevalent throughout our society - obsessed with economic growth, private property and personal wealth. I think essentially it stems from a fundamentally western christian value (see Voltaires Pangloss) - we that assume dominion over all land and beasts (women and natives) shall do with said as we wish.
I’ve just written about this on my blog

For COAL of all things…
At least if it was oil, it’d be combatting the ostrich-like attitude of some of our politicians by delaying peak oil somewhat… but coal is pretty much useless from a Green point of view ;D
