For my part, my favourtie memory of Rod Donald was my introduction to him: watching a video in 4th form social studies about the 1981 Springbok tour, which followed five individuals, some pro-tour, some anti, during that fraught time. Rod Donald was “the radical”, and dressed in his tight 80s pants, fluro bike helmet, and with crazy ginger beard, he certainly made an impression on me. I thought he looked pretty silly, but I actually remember going home and telling my mum that I wished I had something to protest about like that.

Rod donald took part in the Australian Now We The People conferences in Sydney in 2003 and Melbourne in 2005. His contributions on proportional representation and on corporate globalisation were highly valued, but even more appreciated was the warm sense of connection between our movement and the NZ Greens which he helped to create.

We are shocked at Rod’s sudden death. We salute him for a life lived to the full for a better world for all of us.

We express our sincere condolences to Rod’s family and all his comrades, in this time of grief.

Rod Donald

The environmental movement has lost a great leader and an outstanding New Zealander.

Rod Donald made an immense contribution to moving New Zealand towards a more sustainable and environmentally just society. Rod’s energy and intelligence have been crucial in moving the debate about environmental sustainability into the political mainstream.

Throughout his life Rod created and inspired social, economic and environmental change, realising that one could not succeed without the others. He was a humanitarian, as concerned for people as he was for the environment. He inspired many with his principled commitment to sustainable living, his enthusiasm, humour, and personal warmth. Long before the term “sustainability” gained currency, Rod was implementing it, campaigning as a teenager for recycling and then stronger urban communities.

Countless issues have benefited from Rod’s activism and his immense strategic, political and communication skills – recycling, glass milk bottles, ethical business, fair and safe trade, buy kiwi-made, urban transport, and the privatisation of coastal campgrounds. He brought to public attention the environmental and social consequences of current economic policies and a vision for a better future.

Rod gave immeasurable practical and political support to numerous grassroots environmental campaigns. He publicised the impacts of Timberlands’ logging while taking one of his famous apple cakes to West Coast tree sitters, and highlighted the pest menace with his possum covered seats at Parliament and on his bike. The environment has lost one of its best and most effective friends.

The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society extends its heartfelt sympathy to Rod’s partner Nicola Shirlaw and their daughters Emma, Holly and Zoe.
