Inquistor General Wayne Mapp must surely be giving some thought to the insideous effect of New Zealand’s PC road rules on Kiwis’ ability to ‘get ahead’.
Why do we drive on the LEFT hand side of the road?
Sounds like social (road) engineering to me.

I believe it actually comes from having one’s sword arm free! (sorry, southpaws)
But seriously, what is wrong with social engineering? In most spheres we take a lot of time designing things to work just so. And businesses will expend a lot of money in working out strategies and marketing plans. Advertising and PR are surely social engineering on a huge scale! Are we not allowed to “engineer” our social systems to attain health and happiness for most of us?

Of all the countries in the world, I believe only Sweden has ever actually shifted from Left to Right. Probably had something to do with SAAB being bought into GM.

I heard the original of left hand driving was so passing coachdrivers and horse riders could shake hands. And shaking hands with the right hand goes back to showing you’re not holding a weapon. Mapp might want to get rid of such pacifist nonsense.
On the other hand, if you want to fight, you also pass on the left, it being the sword and lance side. So it’s possibly all ‘right’ after all.

It’s just so much easier to ban weapons than worry about who’s driving on which side of the road
although looking at the death-by-driver statistics, maybe we should ban cars as well as weapons ;-D
