the puritanical left of the green movement which tries to tell people what to do with their lives (don’t smoke, esp. in bars and cafes, don’t eat fast food, lets ban the advertising, in schools, etc). Moral puritanism at its worst.

There is a better side to the green movement which consists of allowing personal freedom (e.g to smoke pot). It’s a say day when the puritanical side holds sway as it seems to at the moment.

Unfortunately corporate influence in schools is not new. In 1975 our form 1 class went on a tour of the Chelsea sugar refinery. We were given glossy pamphlets which did not explicitly say sugar is good for you, but gave the message that kids need sugar to be able to run jump and play. I remember being very confused because my parents (both doctors) had taught me that sugar ranks only just below heroin on the white death scale.

Chelsea wasn’t promoting healthy diets in general, just the healthy uses of SUGAR, just like the Beef and Lamb industry promote the healthy uses of RED MEAT. This isn’t about promoting health - how many nutritionists rae concerned that kids aren’t getting ENOUGH refined white sugar in their daily diet??? Do the beef and lmab industry ever mention alternative sources of iron and protein in their information packs?

This is about advertising under the guise of health… and worse yet, under the guise of education.

Anyone see the Simpson’s episode set in the Future, where math or soemthing was sponsored by Pepsi?

I asked for a fair-trade coffee at Starbucks today after I got back from a trip out to Tiritiri Matangi to take pictures of the birds. It turns out that Starbucks only do fair-trade in a plunger, so I ended up with about two more cups of coffee than I was after… and they took forever to serve it, as if they had never been asked before. It was ridiculous and I wouldn’t ask for fair-trade at Starbucks again… But then again, none of my favourite coffee shops on Auckland Uni Campus do anything remotely useful fair-trade-wise…
