Campaign quotes

Waihopai from the air

Rod and Andrew Wilkie visited the Waihopai spy base in Marlborough this morning. The picture accompanying this post is an aerial shot of the base (thanks Wikipedia), which allows New Zealand to form part of the global US-UK-Canada-Australia-NZ intelligence system. A former British Army major, who came to meet Andrew, noted wryly:

We’ve got the balls, but the pricks are in Washington.

Another quote from the campaign trail comes courtesy of Trevor Mallard. In expressing Labour’s coalition preferences, and riffing on Helen Clark’s “last cab off the rank” remark with respect the Maori Party, Mallard said:

I’d rather ride my bike than catch that cab.
