Winston First
There’s a debate about tax on TV One at 8.30pm tonight, featuring representatives of almost all parties in Parliament, including Rod. The Herald is focusing on the fact that Labour is putting up Steve Maharey, not Michael Cullen, for the debate. This is being portrayed by National as Dr Cullen running scared.
I’m more interested in the fact that NZ First isn’t sending anyone. The Herald story says that Winston Peters had a prior engagement. A NZ First spokesperson says they wouldn’t be sending anyone else. I wonder why? Is this an admission that NZ First really is a one-man band, and no-one in the party, other than Winston, is capable of speaking intelligently about tax? I’m sure Bill Gudgeon, Barbara Stewart or Pita Paraone would all have been brilliant ![]()

Do you see a tax policy here?
How do we gain credibility as a party when we aren’t able to have a policy about the one thing that government does that is MOST visible to all its citizens?

BJ, look under ‘E’ for Eco-Tax.
Also look at National and Labour’s sites and tell me if they have Tax policies.

Crikey - Eco-Tax?
You know I read that list 5 times without seeing it? Tax starts with ‘T’.. but you are right, it is there, disguised and misplaced . I’d suggest, and I suppose I will as soon as I get off this message, that there be a simple entry under ‘T’ for Tax that says “see Eco-Tax”…. Fascinating policy. It’d be a hoot to try it, but we’re headed for oblivion with labour f’ing up by the numbers these days. Now how about defense?
I didn’t look at Labour or National… I looked at NZ First. Very straightforward. Misguided of course, but at least present. Looking at and you’re right again… Labour with a big nothing for a tax policy, which explains somewhat their problems getting middle-NZ to vote for them and trust them instead of National. National has a policy section in Finance and Tax (why was this so easy to see and Eco-Tax so difficult), and is semi coherent and misguided but easily found.

Eco-Tax
The policy as written is a castle in the air. It needs a foundation built underneath it and a road leading to the door. We can’t get there from here, anyone who reads it will know it, and unless we provide the details on how that can be done we might better shred it.
